Computing Center

1. Mission & goals

Established in 1991, the Center serves to comprehensively plan for and integrate all the software and hardware of NPIC for the faculty and students to share, create an environment conducive to the smooth flow of information campus-wide, support all the academic departments’ instruction and research, and provide information service and technical consultation. Besides, courses related to information education and computer applications are made available to interested faculties, students, and local prospective IM professionals to enhance their computer and networking proficiency. It is also the Center’s responsibility to promote the interchange of information nationally and internationally.

2.      Staff & Organization

CINC is comprised of three sections, namely Information Networking, Institution Information, and Information Instruction & Technology. Their respective responsibilities are summarized below:

(1)       Information Networking Section: to plan for and construct campus-wide information networks; to maintain and service the networking infrastructure and equipment and their normal functioning; to provide information service and technical consultation.

(2)       Institute Information Section: to plan and install all computing systems on campus; to integrate all relevant data for the enhancement of the computerization of administrative affairs and promotion of administrative efficiency.

(3)       Information Instruction & Technology Section: to research and aggregate the grand need of all units for computer courses; to install the needed software for research and instruction purposes; to plan and execute in advance any matters related to information instruction.

3.      Major lines of equipment

Currently a campus networking system with optical fiber cable as its frame is in place with the installment of Gigabit Ethernet modules to increase the bandwidth at the user end. Meantime, the system is connected by two T1 lines to Taiwan Academic Network (TANET), the primary Internet-access network for academic institutions on the island of Taiwan. While all dormitories are equipped with Internet-ready facilities to facilitate student access to the World Wide Web, a wireless networking system is under construction, and its completion in the near future will create a perfect information-networking environment. To facilitate student learning, it has been the Center’s policy to expand the array of fully retooled labs, eliminate old work stations, and install the latest, most advanced PCs for their increased power and efficiency.

The Center has in its fleet nine computer labs, each equipped with 60 PCs of the latest models. With essential accessories available for use such as printers, scanners, and a multi-purpose speaker-instruction system, each lab virtually provides a top-notched information instruction environment. The Center has in its store a great multitude of software dealing with system design, multi-media production, business (management) application and analysis, and so on. Highly powerful and efficient work stations and servers are convenient for access. In addition, to powerful servers is each PC lab connected using 100 Base T while adopting Windows XP is as the operation system. In short, the Center is dedicated to providing to faculties and students alike easy and pleasurable access to an advanced information networking system and multi-media instructional aids for the sole purpose of facilitating learning and instruction.
